HÀNG ĐẬU WATER TOWER
In 1888, the French president at the time signed a decree establishing the city of Hanoi. Before that, people in Hanoi primarily relied on dug wells and water from ponds and lakes. In 1894, several outbreaks of disease linked to contaminated water affected large numbers of people, including 12,000 French soldiers.
Shortly after being appointed Governor-General of Annam and Tonkin, Paul Bert contracted dysentery and died in 1896. The French quickly moved to complete a clean-water system built to European standards.
The Hàng Đậu Water Tower and the Yên Phụ Water Treatment Plant were built during this period. Because the tower was designed like a fortified bunker or fortress, many people compared it to a military outpost. Over time, “Hàng Đậu Fort” became a familiar name through long-standing habit, even though the water tower itself had nothing to do with a military fort.
The human body is nearly 80% water at birth, with the proportion gradually decreasing as we age. The surface of the Earth is also predominantly covered by water.
Water is the source of life.
Jesus compared Himself to a source of living water. The Bible, in the Gospel of John, chapter 4, verse 14, says:
“But whoever drinks the water I give will never thirst again. The water I give will become in them a spring of water, welling up to eternal life.”
So, let us protect and preserve our water source!
